On Friday, rescuers saved 112 migrants in difficulty in the English Channel near Hardelot and Ambleteuse in Pas-de-Calais. The calm sea encouraged many to attempt the dangerous crossing from France to England. Over 34,000 migrants have made the journey since January, with 2024 already being the deadliest year on record for this route, as at least 73 have perished attempting the crossing.
