16th Anniversary Memorials for Alexandros Grigoropoulos in Athens

Commemorative events, gatherings, and marches are taking place in Athens today to mark the 16th anniversary of the murder of Alexandros Grigoropoulos, a 15-year-old student shot by police officer Epameinondas Korkoneas in 2008. The demonstration commenced at noon at the Propylaea, causing traffic disruptions. Police have made 17 arrests and deployed around 5,000 officers for security. A significant evening march is expected toward the site of Grigoropoulos’s murder, with heightened police measures including the use of drones and temporary closure of metro stations.
