Gabon Votes in Favor of New Constitution Under Military Regime

Gabonese citizens overwhelmingly supported a new constitution with 91.8% approval in a referendum led by military leader General Brice Oligui Nguema. The participation rate was recorded at 53.54%, lower than initial forecasts. The constitution reform includes a seven-year presidential term with no possibility of dynastic succession. Following the military coup that ended 55 years of Bongo family rule, the country is set to hold presidential elections in August 2025. Authorities reported no major incidents during the voting process, citing increased security measures.
