Scottish Government Proposes Early Prisoner Release to Address Overcrowding
The Scottish government is set to introduce legislation aimed at reducing prison overcrowding by shortening the minimum term for prisoners with short sentences. If approved, the new law would allow inmates sentenced to less than four years to be released after serving 40% of their time. Justice Secretary Angela Constance highlighted the necessity of the bill to prevent critical overcrowding, while noting that it wouldn’t affect those convicted of serious offenses, including domestic abuse and sexual crimes.
