Amidst a proposed increase in the broadcasting fee effective January 1, 2025, ARD and ZDF have filed a constitutional complaint in Karlsruhe. The increase, recommended by the independent Commission for the Determination of Financial Needs, has not yet been approved by the federal states. With some state premiers opposing the increase, the public broadcasters argue that failing to adjust the fee could violate their financial independence and programming freedom as protected by the constitution.
