René Magritte Painting Sells for Record $121 Million at Christie’s Auction
A painting by the Belgian surrealist René Magritte, titled ‘L’Empire des lumières,’ has been sold for a record-breaking $121.2 million at a Christie’s auction in New York. This sale marks the highest price ever paid for a surrealist artwork, surpassing Magritte’s previous record of $79 million. The painting, which features a dark street illuminated by a lantern and a bright blue sky, was part of the collection of the late interior designer Mica Ertegun, who passed away in 2023. Only a few artworks globally have exceeded $100 million in sales.
