René Magritte’s iconic painting ‘The Empire of Lights’ was sold at a New York auction for $121 million, setting a record for the Belgian artist. The sale, conducted at Christie’s, marks a significant milestone as it coincides with the centenary of the surrealist movement. The painting depicts a paradoxical landscape and is notable in art history for being the 11th most expensive painting sold at public auction. Additionally, Ed Ruscha’s work also set a record, selling for over $68 million.
