Study Reveals Impact of Housing Instability on Syrian Refugees’ Employment in the Netherlands
A recent study highlights the challenges faced by Syrian refugees in the Netherlands, particularly those who entered between 2014 and 2016. The research indicates that frequent relocations during their initial shelter period negatively affect their chances of finding stable employment. Men and women who moved multiple times during this phase saw significantly reduced opportunities for job integration, with effects lingering for years. Experts advocate for shorter shelter durations and proactive support services to enhance employment prospects, contradicting government plans for more austere accommodation. Currently, 55% of Syrian refugees in the Netherlands hold jobs, often in lower-paid sectors.
