Germany Reports Significant Reduction in Supermarket Food Waste
Since the implementation of a voluntary commitment between the Federal Ministry of Food and retail chains in June 2023, food waste in supermarkets has decreased by almost 24%. The Thünen Institute’s interim report indicates that some companies have even met their 2025 goal of a 30% reduction ahead of schedule. Key strategies include partnerships with food banks and discounted prices for near-expiration products. However, 58% of food waste still originates from households, highlighting the need for broader action.
