Norway Eases Abortion Laws, Extends Term Limit to 18 Weeks

Norway’s Parliament passed a bill on December 3 to expand abortion rights, increasing the period for unrestricted abortions from 12 to 18 weeks. The decision replaces an outdated 1978 law and aims to empower women regarding their bodies. Supporters argue the existing system is paternalistic, while opponents express concerns over late-term abortions, particularly in cases of fetal viability issues. In 2023, 83.7% of abortions in Norway occurred before the 9th week, with only 4.7% after the 12th week with committee approval.
