Rodrigue Petitot, the leader of a movement protesting against high living costs in Martinique, has been sentenced to ten months in prison for inciting attacks on local officials through TikTok videos. His defense attorney claims the sentencing makes Petitot a prisoner of conscience, arguing that his comments were misinterpreted and should not have led to criminal charges. Following the verdict, protests ensued outside the Fort-de-France courthouse, though the island remained largely calm overnight. Petitot may soon be eligible for electronic monitoring in lieu of incarceration.
