EU Member States Approve Smoking Ban in Outdoor Public Areas

European Union member states have endorsed a Commission proposal to extend the smoking ban to outdoor areas, including cafes, playgrounds, and public transport stops. The ban, which is not mandatory, aims to reduce cancer-related deaths. While some countries called for more data on alternative tobacco products, others like Greece and Germany expressed reservations. Health Commissioner Oliver Varhelyi highlighted that about 700,000 people die annually in the EU due to smoking. The initiative marks a symbolic step towards tighter restrictions on smoking in public spaces, focusing on protecting children and vulnerable groups.
