Commemoration of Tragic Maritime and Aviation Disasters in Chania on December 8
December 8 marks a somber day for Chania, Greece, as it recalls two tragic events in 1966 and 1969 that claimed a total of 314 lives. This year, the 58th anniversary of the sinking of the ferry ‘Heraklion,’ which resulted in the deaths of 224 passengers, and the 53rd anniversary of the plane crash of an Olympic Airlines flight, which killed all 90 on board, were commemorated. The Chania City Council officially designated December 8 as ‘a day of mourning’ following these disasters.
