Leeuwarden Commemorates Daring World War II Resistance Action
This afternoon, Leeuwarden pays tribute to a bold resistance operation from World War II, where five resistance fighters successfully infiltrated a prison on December 8, 1944, freeing 52 prisoners without firing a shot. An event includes a re-enactment of their route, a lecture at the Historical Center of Leeuwarden, and a screening of the movie ‘De Overval,’ depicting this historic event. Despite searches by German forces, the freed prisoners and their rescuers disappeared without a trace, and no reprisals followed from the German occupiers.
