Surge in Influenza Cases Predicted Over Holidays, Urges Vaccination
Ireland’s interim Chief Medical Officer Professor Mary Horgan reported a significant rise in influenza cases, with a 67% increase to 277 cases last week. The highest incidence is among children aged one to four and seniors over 80. With 73 hospitalizations noted, Professor Horgan encourages the public to get flu and Covid-19 vaccines. Vaccine uptake remains low for children, while over 1.5 million vaccinations have been administered this year. Additionally, the impact of the Respiratory Syncytial Virus immunization for newborns shows promising results with drastically fewer cases reported.
