Rebels in Syria Announce New Transitional Government Following Assad’s Fall
Rebels who recently seized power in Damascus have appointed Mohammed al-Bachir as the transitional prime minister. This decision comes two days after a successful offensive that ousted President Bashar al-Assad. Al-Bachir, previously leading the rebel-held ‘salvation government’ in Idleb, will oversee the transitional government until March 1. The radical Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham’s leader, Abou Mohammed al-Joulani, coordinated with former Assad PM Mohammed al-Jalali to facilitate the power transition, with the backing of the parliament and the Baath Party.
