Mohammed al-Baschir has been appointed the leader of Syria’s transitional government following the fall of the Assad regime. Formerly the leader in Idlib, al-Baschir faces significant challenges as he strives to unify a nation fractured by nearly 14 years of civil war. He has called on Syrians abroad to return and help rebuild the country, asserting that Syria is now a free land. His leadership comes under the shadow of various local and foreign interests competing for influence in Syria.
