Ocean Viking Rescues Migrants Amid Mediterranean Tragedy
The Ocean Viking, operated by SOS Méditerranée, rescued 34 migrants in distress off the coast of Libya. Most of the survivors come from Syria and Gambia. The organization expressed sorrow over a recent tragedy in which 44 individuals went missing from a boat leaving Tunisia. SOS Méditerranée criticized European policies and the behavior of Libyan coastguards for exacerbating these dangerous situations. According to the International Organization for Migration, over 2,140 individuals have gone missing or died attempting to reach Europe this year.
