Meet Haggis: Rare Pygmy Hippo Born at Edinburgh Zoo
A rare female pygmy hippo named Haggis has been born at Edinburgh Zoo, marking a significant moment for the endangered species. Born on October 30, Haggis is part of a population estimated at just 2,500 remaining in the wild, primarily in West Africa. Zookeepers report that her personality is already emerging, although the zoo’s pygmy hippo house will be closed for a month to support her critical early development. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) classifies pygmy hippos as endangered, highlighting the importance of this new birth.
