Ocean Viking Rescues Migrants Amid Ongoing Mediterranean Tragedies

The Ocean Viking vessel operated by SOS Méditerranée rescued 34 migrants off the coast of Libya, with most originating from Syria and The Gambia. Despite this relief, the organization expressed sorrow and anger over a recent tragedy near Sfax, Tunisia, where 44 migrants drowned. SOS Méditerranée condemned European policies hindering rescue missions and criticized the Libyan coast guard’s dangerous practices. The International Organization for Migration reported that over 2,410 people have died or gone missing this year attempting to cross the Mediterranean to Europe.
