Investigation Clears Officers in Controversial Arrest of Black Teen with Water Pistol
An investigation by the Independent Office For Police Conduct (IOPC) concluded that armed police acted reasonably when they arrested a 13-year-old Black boy, known as ‘Child X,’ who was mistakenly believed to be wielding a real firearm during an incident in Hackney, London. The boy’s mother criticized the findings, claiming the response was racially motivated, highlighting issues of ‘adultification’ and discrimination. Despite the distress caused, the IOPC found no evidence suggesting racial bias influenced the officers’ actions.
