Binia Bill: Pioneering Female Photographer of Modern Switzerland

The works of Binia Bill, one of Switzerland’s first female photographers, are on display at the Fotostiftung Schweiz in Winterthur. Known for her unique perspectives and modern portrayal of life in Switzerland during the 1930s, Bill transitioned from a concert cellist to photography, experimenting with light and structure. Curator Teresa Gruber highlights her contributions to the ‘New Seeing’ style. Despite her promising career, Bill stopped photographing in 1942, leaving questions about her reasons. Her photographs offer a glimpse into a modernity that faded with the advent of World War II.
