Switzerland’s Social Assistance Rate Drops to Record Low in 2023

In 2023, Switzerland’s social assistance rate fell to 2.8%, marking the lowest level since the introduction of the statistics in 2005, according to the Federal Statistical Office. This decline, attributed to a strong job market, reflects a decrease of 0.1 percentage points from the previous year, with 7,100 fewer individuals relying on social assistance. Urban areas show higher rates, particularly where populations exceed 20,000. Despite overall growth, certain groups, notably children, foreigners, and divorced individuals, still experience elevated rates of assistance.
