Increasing Number of Colombians Seeking Asylum in Germany Amid Low Approval Rates

A growing number of Colombian nationals are applying for asylum in Germany, despite nearly zero chances of approval. The German government aims to inform Colombians about the slim prospects of resettlement while encouraging skilled migration in sectors facing labor shortages. Joachim Stamp, the government’s migration envoy, recently traveled to Colombia for discussions with President Gustavo Petro, emphasizing that asylum is not the appropriate route for entering the German job market. Over 3,500 Colombians sought asylum in Germany in 2024, marking a significant increase from previous years.
