Concerns Arise Over Arsenic Contamination in Gotthard Tunnel Project

Recent investigations reveal that arsenic is present in the rock being excavated for the second Gotthard tunnel. The Swiss Federal Roads Office was reportedly surprised by this discovery, having previously expected no arsenic based on geological reports. Amidst environmental concerns, a risk assessment suggests that up to 400,000 tons of excavated material are contaminated. The canton of Uri is halting plans to dispose of this material in a nearby lake and is instead rerouting it for use in a proposed village park in Airolo. Politician Greta Gysin has raised questions about the project’s safety.
