Global Coal Demand Reaches Record High in 2024, Expected to Stabilize by 2027

The International Energy Agency (IEA) reports that global coal demand reached a record level in 2024 at 8.77 billion tons, but is expected to stabilize by 2027 due to the rise of renewable energy sources. Trade volume is anticipated to hit 1.55 billion tons, with prices significantly above historical averages. China remains a key player, consuming one-third of the world’s coal, while demand is also rising in emerging economies like India and Indonesia. In advanced economies, coal demand is peaking and declining.
