Ancient Marble Tablet Inscribed with Ten Commandments Sells for Over $5 Million at Sotheby’s
Sotheby’s auctioned what it claims to be the world’s oldest marble tablet inscribed with the Ten Commandments for over $5 million on December 18. The 52-kilogram artifact, dating from the Byzantine Roman period, generated significant interest, surpassing the estimated price of $1 to $2 million. Discovered in 1913 in Israel, it features inscriptions in Paleo-Hebrew. Despite its high price, experts have urged caution regarding its authenticity, noting the prevalence of forgeries in artifacts from the region.
