BBC Apologizes for Reporting Errors That Led to Abortion Trial Collapse

The trial of Sophie Harvey, accused of illegally aborting her baby, collapsed at Gloucester Crown Court due to significant reporting errors by BBC Points West. The judge criticized the ‘appalling and sloppy’ journalism, which included inaccuracies about the case. Harvey and her boyfriend, Elliot Benham, admitted to buying abortion pills, but Harvey denied using them, claiming she gave birth to a stillborn. Following the trial’s dismissal, they pleaded guilty to related offenses, resulting in community sentences. A new trial is scheduled for February 2025.
