Over 50,000 individuals have died from opioid overdoses in Canada since the onset of the crisis in early 2016, according to health authorities. This data comes as U.S. President-elect Donald Trump criticized Canada for not doing enough to curb fentanyl exports to the U.S., threatening to impose tariffs. While there is a 39% increase in fentanyl-related overdoses since 2016, this year’s figures indicate an encouraging 11% decrease in overall overdose deaths, although rates remain alarmingly high.
