NASA’s Parker Solar Probe Makes Record-Breaking Closest Approach to the Sun
On Christmas Eve, NASA’s Parker Solar Probe made history by approaching the Sun within 6.1 million kilometers, setting a new record for solar proximity. The spacecraft, launched in August 2018, will take years to analyze the data collected during this mission. Operating at extreme speeds and temperatures, the probe aims to enhance our understanding of solar phenomena, particularly solar winds and storms. The project’s German contribution is led by astrophysicist Volker Bothmer from the University of Göttingen, who highlighted the significance of this unprecedented data from the Sun’s atmosphere.
