Increased Medication Costs Drive Swiss Patients Toward Generics

Starting in 2024, Swiss patients will face higher costs for original medications compared to generics, encouraging the adoption of cheaper alternatives. Data from health insurer Helsana shows a significant rise in the use of generics among chronically ill individuals, demonstrating the effectiveness of the policy. As of July 2024, the adoption rate of generics increased from 12% to 25%. Health organizations argue that more generics need to be available in the market to maximize savings, while suggesting regulatory changes to lower barriers to entry.
