Italy Sees Drop in Asylum Seekers but Maintains Controversial Centers in Albania

In 2024, Italy has witnessed a significant decline in asylum seekers arriving via the Mediterranean, with numbers dropping from 158,000 in 2023 to 65,000 this year. The reduction is largely due to various African countries, especially Tunisia, restricting migrants. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni continues to push for asylum processing centers in Albania despite legal challenges. Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, recently acquitted of charges related to migrant detention, may seek to reinstate his role as Interior Minister. The issue of migration remains a contentious topic in Italy.
