Trinidad and Tobago Declares State of Emergency Amid Rising Homicides

The government of Trinidad and Tobago has declared a state of emergency following a surge in homicides, with 623 murders reported this year compared to 557 in 2022. Prime Minister Keith Rowley cited a police report highlighting criminal activity threatening public safety. Attorney General Stuart Young stated that this measure allows police to conduct searches without warrants and extend detention periods. The army has also been put on alert as authorities address escalating gang violence, which includes the use of automatic weapons.
