Violence Against Religious Sites in Crete Reaches Alarming Levels in 2024
In 2024, Crete recorded 49 incidents of violence at religious sites, ranking third nationally in Greece. A total of 608 such incidents were reported across the country, with the highest numbers in Attica and Central Macedonia. Many of these attacks targeted Orthodox Christian sites, suggesting a troubling trend of vandalism, theft, and desecration. The report by the Greek Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs, and Sports highlights the need for greater protections for places of worship.
