Former Greek Prime Minister Costas Simitis Passes Away at 88
Costas Simitis, the former Prime Minister of Greece, died on January 5 at the age of 88. He was in his vacation home in Agioi Theodorou. A founding member of the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (Pasok), Simitis served as Prime Minister from 1996 to 2004, where he was instrumental in Greece’s adoption of the euro and the organization of the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. He is noted for having the longest continuous tenure as Prime Minister in modern Greek history.
