UN Reports Record High Executions in Iran for 2024

The United Nations reports that Iran executed at least 901 individuals in 2024, marking a nine-year high and a 6% increase from the previous year. Many executions were linked to drug offenses, with a notable rise in the execution of women. UN human rights chief Volker Türk condemned the rise and urged the Iranian government to halt the death penalty. Reports indicated that over half of those executed belonged to ethnic minorities, while minor offenders also faced execution, violating international law.
