Cecilia Sala, an Italian journalist detained in Iran for alleged law violations, has been released and is returning to Italy. The Italian government confirmed her release, which occurred after diplomatic efforts. Sala was arrested in Tehran while working for the newspaper Il Foglio and associated with Chora Media. Her detention followed the arrest of Iranian businessman Mohammad Abedini in Milan, linked to a U.S. warrant for supplying drone components used in a deadly 2024 attack. No connections were drawn between Sala’s release and Abedini’s case.
