French Scientists to Map and Study Radioactive Waste Dumped in Atlantic Ocean

Starting June 15, 2023, a team of French scientists from CNRS and Ifremer will embark on a mission to locate and assess the impact of over 200,000 barrels of radioactive waste dumped in the Atlantic Ocean between 1950 and 1990. Utilizing a next-generation autonomous robot capable of diving up to 6,000 meters, they aim to map these waste sites and study potential radioactive leakage. The mission, lasting one month, will also involve monitoring radiation levels to ensure crew safety, with all results published transparently online.
