Dutch Agriculture Minister Acknowledges Limitations in Tackling Manure Surplus
In a recent parliamentary session, Dutch Agriculture Minister Piet Adema admitted that the government’s measures to address the manure surplus among farmers will not completely resolve the issue. While acknowledging the hard work being done to find solutions, he emphasized that farmers also bear responsibility in managing excess manure. The end of the EU’s manure derogation has heightened concerns about compliance, with some legislators suggesting illegal dumping may be a temptation. A €1 billion support package for farmers is proposed, along with plans to export more manure and transform it into fertilizer, yet concerns about long-term strategies remain.
