43 Monkeys on the Loose in South Carolina After Lab Escape
Forty-three rhesus macaques have escaped from a research facility in Yemassee, South Carolina, after a keeper mistakenly left their pen open. The young females, each weighing around 7 lbs, are currently being sought by local police, who are using food to entice them back. Authorities advise residents to keep windows and doors closed and report any sightings. Although macaques can be aggressive, police chief Gregory Alexander stated there’s little danger to the public. Previous escape incidents from the same facility occurred in 2016 and 2014. The situation remains ongoing as efforts to recapture the monkeys continue.
