Smoking Linked to Higher Alzheimer’s Risk, Study Finds
Long-term smoking significantly increases the risk of developing Alzheimer’s and dementia, according to recent research led by Professor Christos Savvopoulos from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. The study revealed that lifelong non-smokers have a 19% lower risk of dementia compared to smokers, while those who quit smoking years ago enjoy a 14% reduction in risk. The research highlighted that non-smokers also have a 29% lower chance of vascular dementia. Savvopoulos advises smokers to quit, noting the percentage of smokers in Greece remains unchanged over the past decade, with more female smokers than males.
