Dutch Government Reimburses Students for Discriminatory Fraud Checks
The Dutch government is set to reimburse approximately 10,000 students and former students who were unfairly targeted by a discriminatory fraud detection algorithm related to student financing. Education Minister Bruins has allocated €61 million to address these issues. Between 2012 and 2023, the system prioritized students with a migration background, leading to accusations of indirect discrimination. Previous Education Minister Dijkgraaf acknowledged the problem and suspended the flawed procedure. Bruins aims to rectify the financial penalties imposed based on this unjust method, ensuring all affected students receive their due compensation.
