Rotterdam Remembers the Largest WWII Razzia with Emotional Ceremony
Rotterdam commemorated the 80th anniversary of the largest razzia in the Netherlands, when 52,000 men were deported by German occupiers in November 1944. For the first time, wreaths were laid at the Razzia Monument, officially unveiled last year. Mayor Carola Schouten emphasized the lasting impact of the razzia on families and children. One survivor, 101-year-old Han Thans, shared his harrowing experience of evading capture during the roundup. While most deported men survived, over 500 lost their lives, with the memories of this dark chapter still deeply resonating in the community.
