Border Guards Protest Suspension Amid Migrant Crisis in Samos

Border guards in Samos are protesting against the temporary suspension of their duties at the borders, as they are reassigned to manage the overpopulated Closed Controlled Facility on Samos Island, which currently hosts over 4,000 migrants. Union representative Kostas Panagiotopoulos stated the decision is due to the facility’s overcrowding, but assured guards will resume their duties once resident numbers decline. The guards are calling for permanent employment status to ensure job security, especially as funding for their positions ends in 2027. In early November alone, over 470 migrants arrived on Samos.
