Chef Jamie Oliver has announced the withdrawal of his children’s book ‘Billy and the Epic Escape’ following backlash from Aboriginal leaders criticizing its stereotypical portrayal of Indigenous Australians. The book, which features a mystical Aboriginal girl, has been deemed offensive for its inaccuracies and its reduction of complex cultural beliefs to magical elements. Oliver, currently in Australia to promote another cookbook, expressed regret for the hurt caused and acknowledged that a lack of consultation with Indigenous voices contributed to the issue. The publisher admitted to a ‘editorial oversight’ in the book’s development.
