Outbreak of Sheep Pox Virus in Rodopi Leads to Mass Culls
The sheep pox virus is rapidly spreading in Rodopi, Greece, prompting the culling of 30 flocks by the end of the week, following the slaughter of 32,000 sheep and goats regionally. Niko Fotinias, the director of Veterinary Services of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, emphasized the need for stricter adherence to disinfection protocols among livestock farmers. He noted that while some farmers comply, ongoing violations are exacerbating the outbreak. Additionally, with reports of avian influenza in Bulgaria, citizens are advised to keep domestic birds away from wild ones to prevent contamination.
