Climate Crisis Triggers Water Shortages in Greece

Greece is facing severe water shortages exacerbated by climate change, with lakes, rivers, and reservoirs drying up. Experts attribute the crisis to a combination of prolonged drought conditions and increased water consumption, particularly in islands popular with tourists. Corfu is among the hardest-hit areas, where groundwater resources are rapidly depleting. Ionian Islands regional governor Yiannis Trepeklis noted that while water quality was a concern in 2000, the current focus has shifted to shortages, highlighting the growing urgency of the situation.
