Taliban Executes Convicted Murderer in Public Display of ‘Qisas’ Justice

In eastern Afghanistan, Taliban authorities executed a convicted murderer in a public event attended by thousands, marking the sixth public execution since their return to power. The execution of Mohammad Ayaz Asad took place in Gardez, with a family member of the victim carrying out the shooting. Officials, including Interior Minister Sirajuddin Haqqani, were present as the Taliban reinforces its interpretation of Islamic law with ‘eye for an eye’ punishments. Critics, including the UN and human rights organizations, have condemned these practices, which echo the brutal governance seen during the Taliban’s first rule from 1996 to 2001.
