Fatal Tugboat Capsizing Near Greenock Linked to Safety Failures

An investigation into the capsizing of the MV Biter tugboat in February 2022 revealed a significant breakdown in safety procedures. The Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) attributed the tragedy, which claimed the lives of George Taft and Ian Catterson, to 14 safety issues, including improper communication between the tug and the cruise ship Hebridean Princess. The report noted excessive speeds and a lack of understanding among the vessel crews worsened the risks involved. Clyde Marine Services, the tug’s owner, must now improve safety management and training protocols to prevent future incidents.
