Ukrainian President Criticizes Scholz for Call with Putin

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj expressed anger following German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s first telephonic conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin in nearly two years. Zelenskyj accused Scholz of opening ‘Pandora’s Box,’ suggesting the call would weaken efforts to isolate Putin. The Ukrainian administration condemned attempts at ‘appeasement,’ arguing that concrete actions are required to compel Russia to negotiate peace. Scholz, however, urged Putin to end the invasion and seek a ‘just and lasting’ agreement, met with Kremlin resistance over territorial claims stemming from Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea.
